Adoption
Are you interested in one of our fur-noses?
This is how the adoption process works at Place for Strays:
-
Expressing interest
Would you like to offer one of our dogs a loving home? Are you ready to take care of them, invest time, have patience, and never part with them again? Then send your completed questionnaire (at the end of this page) to info@placeforstrays.de. As this questionnaire is the basis for the following initial interview, we would be delighted if you could answer the questions here in as much detail as possible!
-
Choosing your fur nose
We’re happy to advise you when it comes to choosing your dog. Which one is right for you depends on your personality, lifestyle, and expectations. We know our dogs very well and can tell you a lot about their character and behaviour. Open and honest advice during the selection process, as well as preparing our dogs for their new families, is always important to us. Reliable aftercare is also part of every adoption. These principles may be the reason why our success rate of happy adoptions is so high.
-
Are the dogs healthy?
When arriving at PLACE for STRAYS, all dogs are tested for possible illnesses, especially tick-borne fever, leishmaniasis, and heartworms. It goes without saying that we are fully honest regarding the health and possible problems of our dogs.
If they’re sick, they’re, of course, treated. Our dogs are dewormed, vaccinated, neutered/spayed, and protected against ticks, fleas, giardia, and worms on schedule. However, it can happen that despite regular deworming, a dog may still have worms or giardia when arriving at their new home — unfortunately, that can’t be fully avoided in the environment of a shelter. Naturally, we’re here to advise you in such cases. In general, we only release dogs for adoption once we believe they’re socialised and able to cope well in a home environment.
-
Pre-adoption home check
Once you’ve chosen your furnose, a home check is always carried out to ensure the conditions for proper dog care are met. This is done by one of our team members and mostly takes place online.
-
Decision and travel preparations
If everything fits and all questions are clarified, nothing stands in the way of adoption.
Once the adoption is confirmed, the dog will receive another vet check. Their EU Pet Passport and microchip, will be registered in your name. For this, we need a photo of the front and back of your ID card.
At the same time, we organise your dog’s transport. -
Adoption fees
We ask for an adoption fee of:
- €350 for adoption abroad
- €200 for adoption within Portugal.
During their stay at PLACE for STRAYS, your furnose has received:
- Deworming (approx. €15)
- Seresto collar or other parasite protection (approx. €28)
- Lab test for leishmaniasis, heartworm, and three types of tick-borne fever (€37.50)
- Full blood count (to check for microfilariae)
- All vaccinations, including kennel cough and rabies (€53)
- Neutering/spaying (if age-appropriate) (approx. €55 male / €80 female)
They’ll also travel with:
- Leash, safety harness, and collar (approx. €25)
- EU Pet Passport (€11.25)
- Microchip and registration (€15)
Transport costs vary between €120 and €200.
Because the medical care of our dogs is financed through donations, the income from adoptions is used for water, electricity, equipment, maintenance, and construction projects at PLACE for STRAYS.

The journey to you
Your dog will usually travel by land transport to Germany. We work exclusively with recognised and reliable transport companies.
On the day of arrival, you or someone you authorise will meet at the agreed pick-up point to collect your dog — along with their passport, vaccination booklet, collar, harness, leash, and our best wishes for a happy future together. -
Support after adoption
The journey is exciting and stressful for many dogs. Plus, there’s a new environment, new faces, noises, and smells. It’s completely normal if your dog initially doesn’t want to eat, drink, relieve themselves, or be petted. Some may even hide at first. Please give them the time they need to settle in.
At first, we recommend only short walks near your home, which you can gradually extend. We also suggest double securing the dog (collar and safety harness) for the first two weeks.
All of us at PLACE for STRAYS care deeply about “our” dogs and love to know how they settle in during the first three to four weeks. We’ll check in with you, and we’re always happy to receive updates and photos.
If any questions or problems arise, of course, we’re here to support you.
